Aboriginal Languages
and Repatriation of
Ancestral Remains

We are protecting Aboriginal languages and ensuring our First Nations people can handle their ancestral remains in line with their traditions.

What we'll do

A re-elected Marshall Liberal Government will continue to focus on practical actions which support the aspirations of Aboriginal people for more economic opportunity and better government services to build stronger Aboriginal communities.

If re-elected, we will invest $3 million to further protect Aboriginal languages and to extend the pilot program repatriating ancestral remains to other First Nations.

Specifically, we will:

  • Provide $350,000 a year to continue the Reawakening Aboriginal Languages project at the South Australian Museum – protecting languages that could otherwise disappear forever.
  • Extend to other First Nations the pilot ancestral remains repatriation project initiated with the Kaurna People – an important step towards reconciliation.

This builds on our plan to deliver better, more culturally appropriate services and outcomes that improve the lives of Aboriginal South Australians in the short and long term.

What it means for you

  • Aboriginal languages are protected from disappearing
  • Aboriginal people can ensure ancestral remains are managed in accordance with their traditions
  • Aboriginal culture is being respected and preserved for future generations
