A re-elected Marshall Liberal Government will invest $7.5 million to create a brand-new ‘African Oasis’ along the banks of the River Torrens.
The back of the zoo currently runs next to the River Torrens but there are utilities, services and a high fence blocking the view. This upgrade will enable visitors to see their favourite African creatures in brand new enclosures while also enjoying a view over our city river.
Opening up the back of the zoo to the river also means that a walk along the Torrens will give you a view of the zoo’s famous resident giraffes.
This project will make more of the zoo accessible to the public, will increase greenspace and tree canopy and will offer the highest levels of animal welfare to species including the giraffe, the pygmy hippopotamus and native species.
The Adelaide Zoo is a huge drawcard for city tourism – already attracting over 400,000 visitors every year. This upgrade – along with our plan to build a new Entertainment Centre on the riverbank and our plan to transform the River Torrens and the Linear Park Trail – will help make our river the centrepiece it should be.
