Happy Valley Reservoir:
Open to the Public

The Marshall Liberal Government has opened up South Australia’s reservoirs, giving people access for the first time in more than 120 years.

What we said we'd do

Open South Australia’s reservoirs to the public.

What we've done

The Marshall Liberal Government is opening up reservoirs across the state – including Happy Valley Reservoir.

Under Labor, reservoirs were locked away behind high fences but now people are enjoying walking, cycling, picnicking, kayaking and fishing in these picturesque surroundings.

Plans for Happy Valley Reservoir include two kayak launch areas, car parks with trailer and kayak drop-off facilities, picnic settings and shelters and a boardwalk jetty and lookout offering stunning views over the water.

Happy Valley Reservoir also forms an important part of Glenthorne National Park – another example of how our government has taken underused land and turned it into beautiful, green, open space.

Opening up reservoirs is part of our government’s record investment in parks and open spaces, ensuring our precious environment is protected and people are able to visit and enjoy our picturesque open spaces for generations to come.

What we'll do

A re-elected Marshall Liberal Government will invest an additional $3.5 million at Happy Valley Reservoir to significantly expand visitor facilities including car parking, additional toilets, extra picnic shelters and outdoor furniture.

More trail connections will also open up access to the eastern side of the reserve and allow fishers greater vantage points.

What it means for you

  • Access to beautiful open spaces that were previously locked away
  • Increased nature-based tourism creating more jobs for South Australians
  • Protecting our environment for you now and for future generations
