More Apprenticeships
and Traineeships

South Australia is already leading the nation with over 53,000 new apprenticeship and traineeship commencements over the past four years and we are going to build on this success by extending our incredibly successful Skilling South Australia program.

What we said we'd do

Invest $100 million to create an additional 20,800 new apprenticeships and traineeships over four years.

What we've done

The Marshall Liberal Government’s Skilling South Australia partnership with the Federal Government has rebuilt vocational education and training (VET) in South Australia.

We have reformed TAFE, set up a new defence-focused technical college, overhauled VET in schools and provided tax relief and wage subsidies of up to $32,000 for businesses that take on a new apprentice or trainee.

The results speak for themselves.

Since 2018 South Australia has continued to lead the nation with over 53,000 new apprenticeship and traineeship commencements and over 3,400 businesses hiring their first apprentice.

What we'll do

A re-elected Marshall Liberal Government will continue to invest in its hugely successful Skilling South Australia program that has transformed South Australia’s training system.

Our commitment of $12 million to extend the program for another 12 months will help deliver another 12,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships, delivering jobs for young people and ensuring businesses have the skilled workforce they need.

After 16 years of mismanagement under the former Labor Government, the number of South Australians in apprenticeships and traineeships was drastically declining, youth unemployment was unacceptably high and businesses were facing critical skills shortages.

In contrast, the latest national data shows that, under the Marshall Liberal Government, the number of apprentices and trainees commencing in South Australia increased by 72% - more than double the national rate.

These outstanding results in skills training have played a significant role in South Australia having the fastest growing economy in the nation and our extension of Skilling South Australia will build on this.

This $12 million commitment is in addition to the $347 million budget for skills training in 2022-23.

What it means for you

  • Thousands more jobs across health, disability, aged care, construction, defence, and ICT
  • More young people are getting a head start in their careers with on-the-job training – earning while they learn
  • Businesses have the skilled workforce they need now and in the future
