The Marshall Liberal Government is improving outcomes for children in care and investing in early intervention programs to keep more families together safely.

What we said we'd do

Fix Labor’s dysfunctional and chaotic child protection system.

What we've done

The Marshall Liberal Government has increased funding and improved outcomes within our child protection system.

Just like we said we would, we extended foster and kinship carer payments to 21 years of age and are delivering the largest increase in foster and kinship payments in over a decade. We changed the way frontline child protection workers were recruited to ensure we have a skilled workforce and we appointed an Aboriginal Children’s Commissioner to help us keep children safe in culturally appropriate ways.

Importantly, our policies have increased the number of children in family-based care. This leads to better outcomes for these children while also allowing us to invest more of our budget into early intervention programs.

New early intervention and re-unification programs being funded under our government are already supporting hundreds of families, preventing children from ending up in the child protection system and working with families to bring children and parents back together where it is safe to do so.

What it means for you

  • More of our vulnerable children are in family-based care and supported until age 21
  • Vulnerable families are being supported so that more children can stay with their parents safely
  • More of our children will have the best possible start in life
