Road Maintenance
and Safety

We are fast tracking road maintenance and road safety upgrades across the state, getting South Australians home sooner and safer.

What we've done

To improve road safety, the Marshall Liberal Government is delivering a combination of infrastructure upgrades and road safety improvements that focus on driver training and increased penalties for those who do the wrong thing.

We’re upgrading metropolitan roads and intersections – fast-tracking vital maintenance work and creating jobs through our $373 million Road Safety Package.

We’re upgrading around 4,800 km of regional roads – sealing road shoulders, widening lanes, installing guide posts and resurfacing – because a lot of serious accidents happen on our regional roads.

A lot of serious accidents also involve motorcycles. That’s why, in addition to upgrading roads and intersections, we have also reformed the Graduated Licensing Scheme, raising the minimum age for a learner’s permit from 16 to 18 years old.

To protect all road users and appropriately punish those who do the wrong thing, we have introduced new laws to enable on-the-spot license disqualification or suspension for people charged with causing death by dangerous driving and we have increased penalties for hoon drivers.

What it means for you

  • Metropolitan and regional roads are safer
  • License changes are protecting our most vulnerable road users
  • Thousands of local jobs are being created through construction projects
